Sopore, May 15 (KNO): Sopore’s long-standing garbage woes are set to end with a dedicated Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) expected to become operational within two weeks, putting an end to the dumping of waste at Jetty in Baramulla. Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said the land for the STP has already been transferred, but the project was delayed due to certain hurdles after local residents approached the court. "We are working to resolve the pending issues. Within the next two weeks, we are hopeful that Sopore will get its own full-fledged STP, and garbage will no longer be taken to Jetty," he said. It is noteworthy that, currently, Sopore faces severe challenges in waste disposal due to the lack of a dedicated site. The garbage is being transported to Jetty, causing environmental and logistical concerns. The DC also revealed that a dedicated State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) component for Sopore is likely to be approved in the coming days. “Until manpower for the unit is sanctioned, we have decided to procure essential machinery, including boats, from the SDRF. The police will temporarily use these resources to respond to drowning and other water-related emergencies,” he said. During a day-long visit and detailed inspection of various offices, the DC Baramulla also ordered the demolition of unsafe structures to safeguard public safety. “Public safety is our top priority. Structures that pose a threat to life and property must be dealt with firmly and promptly," he said—(KNO)
